Live in Security

live in security

Freedom has historically been significant to Americans. It’s an even bigger deal to God. It’s such a big deal He sacrificed His only Son to set us free. But what did He set us free from, and what did He set us free to do? In the first of our “Free To” series, let’s consider how Christ sets us free from condemnation so we are free to live in security.

Freedom from Condemnation

In the legal sense of the word, condemnation refers to the punishment a person receives for a crime. For example, a murderer might be condemned to death or life in prison. But even if his crime hasn’t yet been discovered, a guilty one lives in the prison of constant fear his deed will be discovered.

The Bible says God is the Judge of everything on earth, including us (Hebrews 12:23). Our actions are either holy—or not. Even one wrong thought, word, or deed will render us unholy and unable to measure up to God’s perfect legal standard. In other words, we stand condemned.

Our sin condemns us to death. That’s the bad news. But the good news is Jesus took the condemnation we deserve upon Himself. Anyone who will bow to Him as Lord becomes free from the condemnation of death.

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1 NLT)

I pray you have freedom from condemnation through Jesus. If you’re not sure, please check out Steps to Peace with God.

Freedom to Live in Security

Merriam Webster notes several definitions for the word security. We can understand something about security in Christ from most of them.

• All our needs are met in Christ. He cares about us from the inside out and provides from His unending supply.

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19 NLT)

• Christ protects us so we do not need to fear any enemy. His power eclipses any person, spirit, or situation we may encounter. He stays awake and alert to watch over us 24/7.

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. (Psalm 5:11 NLT)

• Christ is the firm foundation our lives rest upon. We will experience unknowns and troubles in this world, but the ground beneath us, the Truth, never shifts or disintegrates. We can depend on Him.

Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken. (Isaiah 28:16 NLT)

• In Christ, we know for certain what happens at the end of life on earth. Security is something given as a pledge for future payment. On the day we bow to Jesus as our Lord, He seals His promise of eternal life in heaven by sending His Spirit to dwell within us. The Holy Spirit guides us safely through this life and into the next. Nothing can remove the fellowship of the Spirit from us.

The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. (Ephesians 1:14 NLT)

Walk in the Security of Christ

Does timidity or boldness characterize your life? In Christ, we have freedom from condemnation, so we are free to live in security. We can face any circumstance with confidence and, like Apostle Paul, say, “I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better” (Philippians 1:20-21 NLT).
